October is Small Business Month in Canada, and we’re using it to shine a light on the business owners we work with every day.
This month, we’re featuring Moradeyo, founder of Nefer Remittance. She has spent years helping people move money between Nigeria and Canada, first by hand and now through a digital platform built on everything she learned along the way.
Meet Nefer Remittance
Nefer Remittance is a financial technology company that makes it simpler to move money between Nigeria and Canada. Its customers are people whose financial commitments live in both countries: parents paying Canadian school fees, entrepreneurs buying vehicles, businesses covering shipping costs, and families managing everyday obligations.
The company grew out of 9ja Settlement, a business Moradeyo built by personally helping customers complete difficult cross-border payments. Over the years it processed millions of dollars in transactions, with much of its growth coming from customer referrals.
Today, Nefer customers can hold Naira and Canadian dollar wallets, exchange currencies and track their transactions in one place.
Behind every payment is a plan that matters. Our job is to help people complete it with greater ease and clarity.

From banking to building
Moradeyo’s path into fintech began in 2007, when she worked in settlement and reconciliation in FirstBank’s Cards and Channels unit. That role taught her what it takes to move money reliably.
When she relocated to Canada in 2018, she struggled to find an affordable, dependable way to move her own funds from Nigeria. At the same time, she was running a cargo company that moved money across four countries, and saw firsthand how hard it was for businesses to meet obligations across borders.
She registered 9ja Settlement as a money services business and started helping individuals and businesses complete those payments. Nefer came next, once she realized technology could help her serve far more people without every transaction depending on her personally.
Build the systems before you need them
Asked what she wishes she’d known in her first year, Moradeyo pointed to systems.
I wish I had understood earlier how important it is to build systems before growth makes them urgent.
Early on, being involved in every transaction helped her understand customers and earn their trust. As the business grew, that level of involvement became hard to sustain. Clear processes, documentation and shared responsibility are what let a business keep its quality as it expands, and give the founder room to focus on where it’s going.
Building Nefer has reinforced that for her: the service customers value has to be backed by an organization that can deliver it consistently.
Room to grow with Apaylo
Before onboarding with Apaylo, Nefer was held back by bank limits that capped how much it could process. Working with Apaylo removed those transaction limits.
With Apaylo, we were able to scale our business to this level.
For Moradeyo, that meant one less major headache and the ability to serve far more customers.
How you can support Nefer
Referrals built Nefer, and they’re still the best way to help.
- Use Nefer for a payment between Nigeria and Canada
- Recommend it to friends, family or business contacts who move money between the two countries
- Share honest feedback about what’s working and what could be better
- Introduce Nefer to a community or business it could serve
Thank you, Moradeyo, for sharing your story.
